How to Plan a Surprise Proposal

As a Montana photographer, I always have so much fun helping my clients plan a surprise proposal for their partners! Proposals make for some of the best candid photos—they’re full of joy, hugs, laughter, happy tears, and a bit of a shock seeing me come out of the bushes.

I’ve had my fair share of experience in helping these special moments happen, so here are my best tips on how to plan a surprise proposal, some suggestions for the most beautiful proposal spots in Montana, and fun extras to make your proposal even more memorable.

The Perfect Cover Story for Your Surprise Proposal

The key to any successful surprise proposal is a solid cover story. Why are you in this beautiful location at this specific time? It could be a romantic picnic, a trip with friends, a scenic hike, or a special dinner. To really keep it a surprise, you want to either make sure it aligns with your usual activities or just remain very casual when making these plans. Because why shouldn’t you go on a hike you both love? Or enjoy a romantic picnic somewhere sweet?

As your photographer, I can help guide you to the perfect spot without giving away the surprise. Trust me, I’ve helped plan surprise proposals in stunning spots like Paradise Valley, Sage Lodge, and the top of a mountain in Big Sky. We call southwest Montana home, and I know it very well and have a lot of ideas for locations.

Plan All the Details

When you choose me as your Montana proposal photographer, I don’t just show up to take photos. I help you plan every detail to make your proposal exactly what you envision for your partner. Whether you want to plan a sleigh ride, a champagne toast, a special hike that’s not too long (so you’re not too red-faced and sweaty!), or even a waterfall proposal, I’ve got you covered.

TIP: I recommend short hikes for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Book Your Photographer

You should definitely hire a photographer to document your surprise proposal. You’ll want to look back at these memories and share the moment with your loved ones! Another reason is that your photographer will be able to help you plan the big moment, especially if you’re traveling. A local can scout the spots for you, so you know your proposal will succeed without having been there yourself yet! How great is that?!

If you choose me as your Montana proposal photographer, I help you plan your surprise proposal so it’s exactly what you envision for your partner, and of course, I’m there to capture the whole thing, too!

Enjoy The Moment

While a beautiful backdrop is great, the real magic is in the moment and your reaction. Don’t worry about finding the absolute perfect spot for the proposal itself. Your love and candid emotions are what make it perfect! We can always adjust your position for portraits after your proposal.

Focus on being in the moment, the joy, the surprise, and those happy tears. You don’t need to rush through it! I’ll be there to capture every single emotion, including the moment they realize I’m photographing the whole thing!

Make it Personal

This is your chance to show your partner just how much you know and love them. Think about their favorite spots, hobbies, and what makes them light up. Is there a place that holds special meaning for both of you? Maybe the coffee shop where you had your first date or your favorite hiking trail? Choose a location that’s meaningful to your relationship.

Incorporate little details that only the two of you would understand. Maybe it’s a line from their favorite movie or a song that’s “your song.” These personal touches will make the moment even more special and memorable. Totally makes your heart swoon just thinking about it, am I right?

Avoid Including Too Many People

I know, I know! You might be too excited to keep it in, however, try to include as few people as possible. More people who know = more chances for someone to accidentally spill the beans.

You don’t have to go totally solo, though. If you know your partner would love to have a close friend or family member there, go for it! Maybe your partner is someone who likes to get their nails done, so having a friend invite them to get mani-pedis ahead of time could be a nice touch. They might appreciate having their nails done for the ring shots!

Tips to Get the Best Surprise Proposal Photos

These are things I always discuss with my client when they book me to capture their surprise proposal to make sure they get THE BEST photos possible!

  • Make sure I can see both of you. Avoid turning your back to me during the proposal. Position yourselves in a way that I can capture both of your expressions.
  • Let your partner reach out for the ring. This small action can draw out the moment a bit longer and allow me to capture even more candid emotions!
  • After the big moment, have a mini photo session. This will give you some beautiful, relaxed photos now that the nerves are out of the way!

5 Best Surprise Proposal Locations in Montana

Previously, I mentioned you should make your proposal personal, which is true – maybe you already have the perfect spot in mind. However, if you’re still looking for the perfect surprise proposal location in Montana, here are some ideas:

Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley has views of the Absaroka and Gallatin mountain ranges, the Yellowstone River, and vast, open skies. It’s a peaceful and stunning location for a proposal, with the open fields and river running through, making a perfect backdrop.

Big Sky

If your partner loves the mountains, Big Sky Resort is the place to be. Big Sky offers gondola rides up to the summit, where you can find a quiet spot with sweeping views of the Rockies. It’s a winter wonderland during ski season and equally beautiful in the summer. The views from the top of Lone Mountain are particularly breathtaking.

TIP: Big Sky + Bozeman have some awesome options for sleigh rides for winter!

Ennis

Ennis, located in the heart of the Madison Valley, is surrounded by the Madison Range and the Gravelly Range, offering stunning mountain vistas and wide-open spaces. The Madison River runs through the valley, adding a scenic backdrop to any proposal. The town itself has a old-west feel that adds to the rustic romance. It’s a really nice blend for a rustic Western vibe proposal!

Bozeman

From scenic parks to vibrant downtown areas, Bozeman has a variety of locations for your surprise proposal. Whether you choose the greenery of Gallatin County Regional Park, the historic charm of downtown Bozeman, or a hidden gem like Peets Hill with its panoramic city views, there’s no shortage of beautiful spots!

Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is probably one of Montana’s most popular and beautiful locations. Here, you’ll find mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and amazing green forests. Imagine proposing with the stunning backdrop of Lake McDonald or at the top of Going-to-the-Sun Road after a beautiful road trip with the best mountain views. This is a great location, especially during the summer with all the wildflowers and in the winter with snowy peaks.

Extra Ideas for a Memorable Surprise Proposal

To make your proposal even more memorable, consider these extra ideas:

  • Hot air balloon ride: Propose while floating above the beautiful Montana landscape.
  • Sleigh ride: A winter wonderland proposal during a romantic sleigh ride.
  • Horseback ride: Ride horses to a gorgeous location.
  • Ski lift: Propose at the top of a mountain after a scenic ski lift ride.
